We’ve all had those days, even times of our life. We are pushed to our limit. With the current ongoing pandemic, many are experiencing added stressors in their life. The often-used term for a “syndrome of emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and decreased effectiveness” is:
BURNOUT. Preparing to present to a large group of physicians on the topic, I came across the “Maslach Burnout Inventory” which included:
- Emotional exhaustion – loss of enthusiasm
- Depersonalization – a distorted perception of oneself
- Low sense of personal accomplishment – feeling ineffective
What is the cause of BURNOUT? OUR THINKING! It’s so easy today to be programmed for burnout. If you’re not worried or stressed out about something, you may be from another planet!
But there’s another more positive way to look at the concept of “burnout” allowing us to elevate the quality of our lives. I get to apply this every week during my Beach Body on Demand streaming weight lifting class “LIIFT 4 with Joel.” Joel will announce towards the end of each session: “It’s time for BURNOUT.” During this segment, he cheers participants to push themselves to physical exhaustion, giving it ALL you have left. The result: true exhaustion! But, it’s followed by an incredible feeling of accomplishment, of vibrancy.
Why not look at life as a workout, giving it all you have each day? I’m inspired by a quote from George Bernard Shaw: “I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no “brief candle” to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.” WOW! That’s saying: Bring it on! I’m up to the challenges life hands me.
The holidays are upon us. The end of the year is approaching. What type “burnout” do you want to end the year? One of exhaustion or exuberance? We all have a choice. Don’t make the decision to wait ‘til January 1, 2021. Be an outlier. End 2020 with an amazing BURNOUT, giving it all you have. It’s about Living WELL Aware!
